Man stripped and beaten blames Egyptian police | Reuters

By Reuters Staff. CAIRO Reuters - A man who was beaten and dragged naked across the ground during a demonstration on Friday told the public prosecution that Egyptian riot police were responsible for the incident, reversing an earlier statement in which he blamed demonstrators. A video of Hamada Saber, 48, being beaten with truncheons by helmeted police has infuriated the opposition, which accuses President Mohamed Mursi of ordering a harsh crackdown on protests two years after the uprising that toppled autocrat Hosni Mubarak. State television had aired overnight a recording of Saber, lying on bed in the police hospital, giving his account of the incident, in which he blamed protesters for stripping and robbing him. However the widely seen footage clearly showed police beating him with truncheons and dragging him naked across a road. Saber said he had seen a crowd running and then felt himself shot in the leg.

Police abuse video stokes anger in Egypt

Police in Egypt have put on a show of strength with a shirtless parade captured in a now-viral video. Rows of men with rippling muscles are seen standing to attention on the roofs of vans, cars and tanks as multiple Egyptian flags flutter in the footage. At one point, a multi-tiered platform holding dozens of statuesque action men appears to the accompaniment of dramatic music. The bronzed beefcakes are new recruits to the Egyptian police who were taking part in a graduation ceremony outside Cairo on Thursday. The event, which was broadcast on Egyptian TV, has caused a stir on social media, with many users comparing the images of topless men standing on vehicles to a Pride parade.
The video of the beating, which took place late Friday as protests raged in the streets outside the presidential palace, could further inflame popular anger with security forces just as anti-government demonstrators marched again on the palace Saturday. Egyptians were outraged last year when military police were caught on camera dragging a veiled woman through the streets during a protest, pulling her conservative black robe over her head and revealing her blue bra. In the footage from Friday, at least seven black-clad riot police beat year-old Hamada Saber, whose pants are down around his ankles, with sticks before dragging him along the muddy pavement and tossing him into a police van. It was not clear how his clothes shirt and pants were removed.
